Things to Keep on Top of:

Don raises a number of interesting points in this Winter Dustoff:

employment after retirement

  • Boards may not hire as many retired teachers to supply teach in the future. Fewer retirees in the next few years may cause Boards to open up positions to new recruits.

  • Teaching after retirement rules are likely to change as OTPP completes its review. Expect a flat 40 or 50 days maximum to replace the current 95 days per year for 3 years and 20 days thereafter.

  • rules about post retirement employment have changed. See the otpp website

health plan changes and cost increases at the public board

  • the Durham Board of Education will in November create a separate group in its medical plans for retired teachers. Expect fee increases between 10-66%. RTO offers an alternative plan which might be considered if costs escalate dramatically or as retirees reach the age 65 cutoff.
